<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I am a lucky blogger in that I occasionally happen upon friends' stories or photos that capture my attention and I ask if I can share them with Zella readers.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is just such a case.

"T" on one of his adventures - boots, cape and absolute focus while balancing on a log.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">My dear friend and former colleague Megan has an adventurous 5-year-old boy "T" who loves exploring and inventing.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is Megan's recap of how the quote from "T" came about:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">"It all came about while we were driving to school the other morning. He
enjoys playing with ropes. They become anything from snakes, weapons,
tools and in this case, zip lines. While driving, he had tied a rope to
the passenger head rest in front of him and the other end to the safety
handle. He said he made a zip line and had a little ninja figurine
sliding down it. Then he noticed the slack of the rope and that it made
another zip line, just shorter. He began joking around that I got the
short zip line. I went with the joke and it made him laugh to think he
had a longer zip line than me. He then proceeded to share the longer one
with me and began talking about various lengths of zip lines."
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The quote came after his playing with his ninja figurine and creating the zip line:
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">'THE WORLD IS MY ROPE SWING.'

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As an advocate for children to make their own play choices and to be an active agent in making meaning of their world, I had one of those crinkly smiles on my face when I had first read "T"s quote and Megan's story. THIS is what I would wish for all children: The sense of freedom to create, the continued drive to play and be playful, and the gift to trust in one's relationship to something as an individual.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">"T" seems to know at age 5 that he has power and has a place in the world - with or without a rope swing.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I am afforded the opportunity for reflection on my blogging life and my teaching life.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This opportunity comes in the form of some recovery time at home after having wrist surgery last week. I will be out of my classroom position for at least one month, and we'll see from there how I am doing and when I can return.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The irony in this break from teaching is that I get unbroken time to appreciate the journey of this blog.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I actually started Zella over 3 years ago on a recommendation from the director of my former school who knew I was home recovering from - then - ankle surgery. She offered the idea of a blog, that maybe while I lay at home with my leg elevated, I would maybe give myself something to do with my photographs and learning stories of young children.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Hmm. Interesting idea.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As it turns out, it was an idea that literally changed my professional life.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">My blog has connected me with amazing people from around the world, from
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Teacher Tom to
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">and around the world a few more times.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The blog has given me a voice to share the authentic learning of young children as they engage in their own choices of play:
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Following Emily

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The blog has given me a voice to say Teachers, you are the force of change and for knowing what is the healthiest learning for young children. Teachers, tell your families that choices and time and natural materials are right, absolutely right :
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Be That Teacher

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The blog has given me connections in real life to uplift and encourage social networking for schools as a real, valuable form of communication. Real. Valuable.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This was my most wide spread post on how to be inspired by pedagogy yet how to be grounded enough to commit to the school and culture where you truly teach:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Currently, I am formatting a blog for my school and doing some social networking for them. It is exciting work to be at the beginning of something. To know an amazing school will soon share about their amazing [simple] work of dedicated play with young children.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So, the swing is empty for now yet the stories runneth over.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">We have known each other - well, I have tried to know you - for over 20 years. You altered my teaching life in the most dramatic way when I was a brand new teacher. In turn, you have changed my actual life - the Who I Am and What I Consider Beautiful and How I Respect Children. I am a better, more thoughtful and patient educator. I am a better narrator. I am a better photographer. You changed me and I will always be indebted to you for the gift of loving being an early learning educator.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">[When I was a younger teacher, I thought perhaps I should study the Italian language, I should always use mirrors, I should use black slender ink pens, and - without question - I should have a giant slab of clay just there in the center of the table for children to explore everyday]

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">However, over all these years, the you that I understand has become something else to millions of others from around the world. You are misinterpreted and misrepresented. You are THE Approach to early education that nearly all who get a glimpse of you begin to introduce themselves by saying: "I am a teacher inspired by the values of Reggio Emilia". Who wouldn't be inspired by you? It is inconceivable to not be inspired by you. The Rights of Children, the Environment as Third Teacher, the Teacher as Researcher, the documentation, photography, natural materials, clay, community, food, light, dialogues...it is all so inspirational. And, we cannot forget The City. The city itself is so inspirational.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">[Sigh. I am thinking of the Lions in the Piazza, the Amusement Park for the Birds, the study of Crowds and the phenomenal world-renowned traveling Exhibit.]

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Of course, nearly all who are inspired by you are not from Your city. Nearly all who are inspired by you only see the the hard work you have already done for over 50 years to offer these beautiful, respectful schools to your families. The people from around the world who say "I am inspired by Reggio Emilia" are often trying to "DO" Reggio. Isn't that sort of funny? And a bit sad? That the highest quality early learning center in the world - you, Reggio Emilia - that prides itself on representing its own community, art, language, and culture is being REPLICATED by schools around the world? What happened here? What is missing in the RE message that most believers in you allow their own Culture, their own Children, their own City to not be represented in their School? Isn't it leaning towards crazy
that each educator that is replicating you has completely lost the true
beauty of their own footprint, their own mountains, their own curvy
streets that surely lead to wondrously glorious places?

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">[I am remembering my first workshop with RE educators in 1992 in Boston. It was their first official lengthy workshop in the US, they spoke entirely in Italian, then their lecture was read aloud again in its entirety in English. One of the most amazing 4 days of my teaching life.]

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Within the blogging world, when I asked educators what they value about RE, they shared that the open sense of Time, the Respect for children, the Environment as teacher, the 100 Languages, the teacher and child as Co-Constructors were the keys. I believe in these educators. They do see the richest ideals of RE. Yet I also wonder how many other educators are forgetting to examine what is important to THEM. Rarely, if ever, have I seen or read educators flat out adding - stating for fact - their own ideals from their own school culture that they have weaved seamlessly into their mission. I feel like we - including me - are so dazzled by the inspiration of REA that we don't even consider incorporating our own beliefs or values. THAT is why I am breaking up with REA. I cannot teach in the beautiful school that I teach and keep seeing what is missing from the RE value set.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">[I am setting down the glasses that I have worn for over 20 years that kept me seeing schools and spaces only from the RE perspective.]

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I want to be committed to where I teach, what our school believes in, and fold in what our own educators choose are the values of our City and Community. This doesn't mean others should do the same, that's the point. Follow what makes sense to you. It's just that, for me, I realize being inspired by you, Reggio, does not let me see anything else.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">[I am a member of NAREA. I have traveled to Boston, St. Louis, Boulder, Calgary, and many cities in California to learn from Amelia Gambetti, Leila Gandini, George Forman and others. I have traveled to Italy. I have seen the Exhibit perhaps 10 times. I own nearly every quality book published about Reggio. My first edition 100 Languages yellow book, dog-eared and highlighted, is my educator bible.]

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I hope we can still be friends.

I was thinking about how teachers we know in the blogosphere are teachers We Know, I mean Really Know. We know what they believe in (children's right to play), we know their mission (uplifting children's play) and we know they each have been called to their work (being educators who Play alongside children). Tom and Jenny certainly Chose their work, but they really were called to it. Thankfully. Their voices in the blogosphere have changed educators and parents perspectives on Play as THE WAY for children to truly, authentically learn.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I was thinking about how each of us have a calling, really, even in the tiniest of moments. For me, when I think of children, I am pulled toward the word Choice. I realize I have written about Choice before, such as I NEED to Do This and Following Emily . I value it maybe more than most other elements of early childhood education because without it the other elements would likely fail.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here are a few photo examples of Choices being made in children's Play. Each fascinate me in their own way as it seems these children were Called to this specific Play, at this specific moment, and remained engaged in their Choice for lengthy periods of time.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I was speaking with a colleague, Maria, yesterday after school. Maria had been extending an interest of the children by offering musical instruments and music books on our outside patio. Our school had had a community event over the weekend where the university band came and played. The children had been mesmerized and inspired during the party.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Maria shared about Lance deciding to make his own Drum on Monday using cardboard and paper. Maria then shared the most special part: The next day, on Tuesday morning, Lance had made a plan at home before school with his mother. He had told his mom that today when he went to school that he would create a trombone and that she should come to the end of class when Storytime (meeting time, circle time) normally happened because he would play his trombone then.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Lance DID make a trombone at school out of huge recyclable tubes and milk caps for the buttons and lots of tape.
"la la la la la!"<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">At the heart of my commitment to early childhood is my commitment to documentation and photography to capture learning as it unfolds.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Isn't it wondrous? Rocks, boards, pvc pipe, gutters, cones, and more.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Children working with loose parts out in the sand area have the opportunity to invent and reinvent during their play. Everyday can be different or perhaps a follow up on previous play scenes - such as pirate islands or brewing up muddy water poison - and using boards for bridges or gutters for water delivery or boulders for islands.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This particular day in the sand area was interesting for me as I observed two distinct inventive uses of one particular loose part - a large pvc pipe that is basically a connector type pipe with three large holes that could be used for attaching straight tubing or end capes.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">In our sand area, we have a wood play house structure with a small deck in front of it. Along the outside fence post, the pvc pipe was propped up on the corner post.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: large;">When O was finished and had moved on from her coffee machine, two other girls went inside the wood house to do some cooking. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: large;">The use of loose parts allows for FREEDOM for children to be completely in their own play, to see the world in the way they see the world at that very moment - a telescope or a coffee machine -<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">and to engage in their world of play honestly and completely as themselves.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">To be allowed to witness the discovery of Amazing and Beautiful things that exist in the world in the spontaneous time frame that children find them - well - that is the reason I continue to teach. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Bring on the New Year and new stories about children and their learning processes.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have been thinking about the complexity of play and the importance of offering diverse materials for construction. Block play combined with pieces that roll or tilt or stack increase children's ways of thinking about balance, symmetry or design.
As in, the Next Story that tweaks my interest when I see or hear something about young children's innovative methods for learning.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I had the good fortune last week to be speaking with a parent in the 3-5s class in which I teach. The dad, Vlada, and I were talking about his 4-year-old daughter Zoe and - voila! - my Next Story. How amazing that this creative technology story came right to my lap when Vlada told me about how Zoe had been exploring with her iPad at home.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Zoe working at home with her iPad - pausing a scene so she can use her sketch paper to draw a favorite character.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Vlada shared with me how Zoe uses her iPad to watch short children's shows and also do other games on the iPad. A couple weeks ago, Vlada said Zoe started using her iPad - along with paper & pencils - in an unique way:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Zoe would be watching a favorite show on her iPad, then Pause it at a certain point, then turn to use blank paper and pencils to draw details of her favorite characters from the show. Zoe would view her iPad, hit Pause, draw, hit Rewind for a different detailed freeze frame, Pause, and draw further. Zoe would engage this way for long periods of time and has returned to this invented activity many times since Vlada first witnessed Zoe's iPad + Paper art experience. [genius!]

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As an educator, I was particularly struck by Zoe's seamless integration of technology, small motor, choice-making, representational efforts with drawing tools, self-direction, and being an agent of one's own learning.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Of
course, it is no surprise that children are the best teachers to show
us HOW things can be used, turned, pushed, pulled in ways that we as
adults would never dream up.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Of course this tech idea came from the best
source - a 4-year-old in action.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The photo struck me from an early childhood educator lens in 2 ways.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">First, I was in awe of Jennie's perspective taking to give Rowan the focus, her left arm in grand reach motion, her back right leg seemingly just slightly in motion as well. Dad John and pug Stella are blurred in the background yet clearly the goal for Rowan as she tackles crawling one arm/leg combo at a time. How far does Dad and Stella look to Rowan - a football field away?
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Second, I was struck simply by Rowan. The photo really allows me to appreciate - to almost feel - the effort required by a 14 month old to move across the grass field. Think about what Rowan might be thinking: I want to be with my dad and dog. Think about what Rowan might be feeling: With every movement, her knees and shoes and hands FEEL the cool grass, the tiny flowers, the clumpy dirt, and any other obstacles that anyone who is not crawling would not feel. The smell of the grass deepens with every movement. Think about if your own head was merely a foot above the ground, straining to look up and forward, to keep that neck muscle working to keep the body in position to move forward. Wow. I am a little exhausted just thinking about attempting this in my 40+ year old body!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Each child is on their own to feel motivated, to be allowed freedom to move, to test out their body's abilities, to engage in their family life in the way that they can at their age and developmental level.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">No one can "teach" Rowan to crawl across this grass field nor motivate her to do so.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">No one can teach Rowan to coordinate left arm with right leg, then the opposite.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I love that Rowan has her freedom to GO in order that she can do her own needed work from the ground up.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: large;">My husband and I just returned from vacation to Kauai, Hawaii. While of course we did our own adult exploring, dining, surfing, boating and such, my eye was never too far to observe children at play. I find it fascinating to see how parents 'allow' play (or don't) when in a vacation setting.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: large;">When we were walking along the beaches of Poipu on the south shore, I observed these children playing on the rocks, holding various nets. must admit, I took some photos trying to look like I was taking a photo

trying desperately to get some shots of the children (no faces) as they
embraced their rich play at the water's edge.]
There has been a great deal of talk about what is appropriate tech use for young children in the classroom. Hot topics around who has access (economic), how to address fairness (gender, timing, ability) and what is quality technology (software, resources, support). NAEYC addressed technology content and issues around classroom use in their 2012 Statement this year. Check out NAEYC's presentation via Erikson Institute's Webcast of Tech + Media as Tools

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The Statement is a rich tool to use at your own school to discuss and debate what and how you can address technology and media usage for your own students.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<tr style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Simple machines such as a pencil sharpener have the "how does this work" concept just like technology

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Over the years, I have been lucky to be able to incorporate technology in diverse ways. I have never felt pressure to 'teach' technology. None of the constructivist values that I believe in have been compromised by the integration of technology. The blending in of another exploration area (technology) in developmentally appropriate ways is an educator responsibility I take seriously to ensure children are always active agents of their learning.

<div style="color: #351c75; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
3 important realizations regarding technology:

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
ONE - I have been able to OFFER it as a CHOICE

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
TWO - I have been able to INCORPORATE it as a TOOL

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
THREE - I have been able to USE it for REFLECTION and COMMUNICATION.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="color: #351c75; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

described the action, as well. (read in photo). (This was a long-term project on Movie Theatres - many children made photo-reflections from our field experience which we made into a book).
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">This was a Birthday Project where we studied children from birth to age 5 to understand how we - as Young Fives students - had grown since being babies, then ages one through four. I attended an evening event held by the school where teachers were presenting to parents their interpretations regarding their class's discoveries and growth for the year. End of the school year always brings such mixed feelings for me.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The last two years I have been an instructor at a state university in California and even closing the grades with college age students stills brings the same feelings for me.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The investment, relationships, personalities, understandings, discussions, 'aha' moments, struggles, joys...they are all bundled into the final days at a school and the days afterward when the classroom is so quiet. So very quiet.

how could you NOT miss these faces, these personalities, these people?

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
For now, though, it is the bittersweet tug-of-war of emotions of being glad for a summer break and also being sad that the group I just finished working with will never form together the same again. I tell people that I can compare it to a business model of work - it is like every year my entire "department" of colleagues leaves, it just happens that my colleagues are five-years-old. Sigh.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Here is the my favorite, all time favorite, poem that I use when I work with young children and their families. This poem is usually the end paper in the children's individual portfolio books. The poem is the most lovely, quirky, exact compilation of how I feel, what I wish, how I have joy, how I have sorrow.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
Here is the incomparable wordsmith talents of Jack Prelutsky:

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
Today I'm going yesterday as quickly as I can,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
I'm confident I'll do it, I've devised a clever plan,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
it involves my running backward at a constant rate of speed,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
if I'm mindful of my timing I'll undoubtedly succeed.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
Today I'm going yesterday I'm moving very fast,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
as I'm putting off the future for the rather recent past,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
I can feel the pressure fading as I hastily depart,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
and look forward to arriving on the day before I start.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
Today I'm going yesterday I'm slipping out of sight,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
and anticipate I'll vanish just a bit before tonight,

<div style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
when I reach my destination, I'll compose a note to say,

<div style="background-color: white; color: red; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
that I'll see you all tomorrow, which of course will be today.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So, maybe your classroom is Oh So Very Quiet. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Yet, you can keep 'going yesterday' and <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">you will hear the joyful noise coming from the walls.
